Once a hungry traveller happened upon a tiny village and ask the people for something to eat. The villagers we very leery of the traveller and turned down his request for food. "If you have no food for me then I will feed you" he said. If you put a big pot of water on the fire, I'll make you the most amazing pot of Stone Soup.
So, excitedly, they hurried to light a fire and put the pot of water on to boil, to which the traveller added a smooth round stone. After it cooked for a while the traveller tasted it and said "It's good but it could use a carrot or two." One of the villagers said "I have carrots" and ran to get some. After the carrots were added and it cooked a little longer the traveller again tasted it and said "It's good but it could use and onion or two." One of the villagers said, "I have onions" and ran to get some. After the onions were added and it cooked a bit longer the traveler tasted it and said "It's good but it could use some salt and pepper." One of the villagers said "I have salt and pepper" and ran to get some.
And so it went on, each time the traveller tasted the soup and lamented how much better the soup would taste with the addition of a new ingredient. Beef bones, turnips, barley, the list went on until every one of the villagers had brought something to put in the soup pot. When the soup was finished the whole village was ladled a bowl and they all agreed that it was the most amazing soup they had ever tasted. Soup from a stone....Imagine that.
